10 Rules For Startup Success

 The Financial Times has a profile of French (now Silicon Valley) entrepreneur Loic Le Meur today.
Loic is an accomplished entrepreneur - he founded uBlog (merged with Six Apart), organizes the annual Le Web conference and has now created Seesmic (note that I’m an investor in Seesmic). So even though he’s French, his advice, when given, is worth listening to.
Included in the article are his ten rules for startup success. Reprinted below.
1. Don’t wait for a revolutionary idea. It will never happen. Just focus on a simple, exciting, empty space and execute as fast as possible
2. Share your idea. The more you share, the more you get advice and the more you learn. Meet and talk to your competitors.
3. Build a community. Use blogging and social software to make sure people hear about you.
4. Listen to your community. Answer questions and build your product with their feedback.
5. Gather a great team. Select those with very different skills from you. Look for people who are better than you.
6. Be the first to recognise a problem. Everyone makes mistakes. Address the issue in public, learn about and correct it.
7. Don’t spend time on market research. Launch test versions as early as possible. Keep improving the product in the open.
8. Don’t obsess over spreadsheet business plans. They are not going to turn out as you predict, in any case.
9. Don’t plan a big marketing effort. It’s much more important and powerful that your community loves the product.
10. Don’t focus on getting rich. Focus on your users. Money is a consequence of success, not a goal.

 Movie magnate Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, knows what his customers want -- and how to give it to them.
Reed Hastings's eureka moment is a story so perfect that it almost shouldn't be true. It was 1997, and the one-time software designer was already a millionaire many times over from his first startup, Pure Software, which had gone public two years earlier. Still, the $40 late fee that he had racked up for the Apollo 13 DVD stuck in his craw. He started musing on profitable ways to rent out movies without slapping customers with those fees. The result was Netflix, the film-buffy, online DVD-by-mail service with a nearly clairvoyant ability to read its customers' tastes. Netflix's success spawned an unsuccessful copycat operation by Wal-Mart, as well as a more worrisome challenge from Blockbuster, with rumors that Amazon is scouting the territory. Nonetheless, Hastings's operation remains on top, with 3.6 million subscribers (to Blockbusters one million), and projections of 5.65 million by the end of 2006. We talked to Hastings about Netflix, the movies, and the entrepreneurial spirit.

ในห้องเรียนวันหนึ่ง ไอสไตน์ถามนักเรียนว่า "มีคนซ่อมปล่องไฟสองคน กําลังซ่อมปล่องไฟเก่า พอพวกเขาออกมาจากปล่องไฟ ปรากฏว่า คนหนึ่งตัวสะอาด อีกคนคัวเลอะเทอะ เต็มไปด้วยเขม่า ขอถามหน่อยว่า คนไหนจะไปอาบน้ำก่อน "
นักเรียนคนหนึ่งตอบว่า " ก็ต้องคนที่ตัวสกปรกเลอะเขม่าควันสิครับ "
ไอน์สไตน์ พูดว่า " งั้นเหรอ คุณลองคิดดูให้ดีนะ คนที่ตัวสะอาด เห็นอีกคนที่ตัวสกปรกเต็มไปด้วยเขม่าควัน เขาก็ต้องคิดว่าตัวเองออกมาจากปล่องไฟเก่าเหมือนกัน ตัวเขาเองก็ต้องสกปรกเหมือนกันแน่ๆเลย ส่วนอีกคน เห็นฝ่ายตรงข้ามตัวสะอาด ก็ต้องคิดว่าตัวเองก็สะอาดเหมือนกัน
ตอนนี้ ผมขอถามพวกคุณอีกครั้งว่า ใครที่จะไป อาบน้ำก่อนกันแน่ "
นักเรียนคนหนึ่งพูดขึ้นมาด้วยความตื่นเต้นว่า " อ้อ ! ผมรู้แล้ว พอคนตัวสะอาดเห็นอีกคนสกปรก ก็นึกว่าตัวเองต้องสกปรกแน่ แต่คนที่ตัวสกปรก เห็นอีกคนสะอาด ก็นึกว่าตัวเองไม่สกปรกเลย ดังนั้นคนที่ตัวสะอาดต้องวิ่งไปอาบน้ำก่อนแน่เลย ..... ถูกไหมครับ...."
ไอน์สไตน์มองไปที่นักเรียนทุกคน นักเรียนทุกคนต่างเห็นด้วยกับคําตอบนี้ ไอน์สไตน์ ค่อยๆพูดขึ้นอย่างมีหลักการและเหตุผล " คําตอบนี้ก็ผิด ทั้งสองคนออกมาจากปล่องไฟเก่าเหมือนกัน จะเป็นไปได้ไงที่คนหนึ่งสะอาด อีกคนหนึ่งจะสกปรก นี่แหละที่เขาเรียกว่า " ตรรก" " เมื่อความคิดของคนเราถูกชักนําจนสะดุด ก็จะไม่สามารถแยกแยะและหาเหตุผล แห่งเรื่องราว ที่แท้จริงออกมาได้ นั่นคือ " ตรรก" จะหาตรรกได้ก็ต้อง กระโดดออกมาจาก "พันธนาการของความเคยชิน "หลบเลี่ยงจาก " กับดักทางความคิด " หลีกหนีจาก " สิ่งที่ทําให้หลงทางจากความรู้จริง " ขจัด " ทิฐิแห่งกมลสันดาน " จะหา ตรรก ได้ก็ต่อเมื่อ คุณสลัดหมากทั้งหมดที่คนเขาจัดฉาก วางล่อคุณไว้
